LOS ESTROMATOLITOS DEL CERRO PAN DE AZÚCAR, SIERRAS PAMPEANAS OCCIDENTALES, SAN JUAN, ARGENTINA. CORRELACIONES Y SIGNIFICADO ESTRATIGRÁFICO. Se da a conocer la presencia de estromatolitos en rocas metacarbonáticas aflorantes en el cerro Pan de Azúcar (31º 25’ S - 67º 27’ O), Sierras Pampeanas Occidentales, provincia de San Juan. Los bancos carbonáticos se intercalan en rocas metamórficas retrógradas de bajo grado atribuidas al basamento cristalino de la sierra de La Huerta (Complejo Valle Fértil). Las estructuras estromatolíticas se interpretan como de tipo dómico-laminadas, tentativamente asignadas a formas de tipo Conocollenia, globulares, (“bowl-shaped”), y planares. Se analizan las posibilidades de correlación con niveles portadores de estructuras similares del Cámbrico Superior de Precordillera, formaciones La Flecha y La Silla, con las calizas cristalinas de la Formación Angaco, referida al Cámbrico y expuestas en el borde occidental de la sierra de Pie de Palo, con las rocas carbonáticas de la Secuencia Metasedimentaria Difunta Correa, asignadas al Neoproterozoico y expuestas en el sector sur de la sierra de Pie de Palo, y con los niveles estromatolíticos del Neoproterozoico del Sistema de Tandilia. De acuerdo con el análisis de correlación realizado, se sugiere para los estromatolitos del cerro Pan de Azú car una probable edad Neoproterozoico superior (Ediacariano)-Cámbrico inferior.
Abstract
THE STROMATOLITES FROM THE PAN DE AZÚCAR HILL, WESTERN SIERRAS PAMPEANAS, SAN JUAN, ARGENTINA. CORRELATIONS AND STRATIGRAPHIC SIGNIFICANCE. The occurrence of stromatolites (“bowl-shaped”, Conocollenia? and lanar cryptalgal laminites),in limestone beds exposed at the Pan de Azúcar hill(31º 25’ S - 67º 27’ W) Western Sierras Pampeanas, San Juan province, Argentina, is reported. The stromatolite-bearing rocks are interlayered within retrograde greenschist facies metamorphic rocks related to the crystalline basement (Valle Fértil Complex) of the nearby Sierra de La Huerta. The stromatolitic structures are described and interpreted as domal-laminated, bowl-shaped and planar stromatolites. Stratigraphic correlations with the Upper Cambrian stromatolite levels of the La Flecha and Zonda formations and the Upper Cambrian-Early Tremadocian La Silla Formation of Eastern and Central Precordillera, and with the crystalline limestones of the Cambrian Angaco Formation, and the Neoproterozoic Difunta Correa Metasedimentary Sequence at the Pie de Palo range, are discussed herein. Also, the correlation with the Neoproterozoic stromatolite levels from the Tandilia System are considered. On the basis of the geochronologic and biostratigraphic correlation, a probable Late Proterozoic (Ediacaran)-Lower Cambrian age is suggested for the Cerro Pan de Azú car stromatolitic limestones.
